Bloomfield Elementary School opened its doors in September 1970. For the first five years of operation, students in Grades 1 to 8 attended Bloomfield. Change came in the fall of 1975, as Grades 7 and 8 students started attending the newly constructed Hernewood Junior High School. At this point, Bloomfield became a grades 1-6 Elementary School.
The French Immersion program was introduced at Bloomfield Elementary in September 1978. This program has had much success right from the beginning. The school remains a dual-track school offering both English and French Immersion programs to this day.
In December 1997, air-quality testing showed high levels of fungi and mold. For the health and safety of our students, the Western School Board of P.E.I. decided to move our students to O'Leary Elementary in the neighbouring community of O'Leary. New working relationships were formed with the gracious hosts in O'Leary Elementary while repairs to our school were being carried out. School staff, parents, students and Board officials working together made the best of a very unfortunate situation and staff and students were able to move back into the extensively renovated building during August 1997, in time for the fall opening.
In the last two decades, Bloomfield has seen much activity and growth. The school was happy to become a K-6 school when Kindergarten became part of the public education system. More renovations have occurred with the installation of a state of the art ventilation system in 2010. Wiring, heating, playground equipment and many other upgrades have happened since that time. Enrollment has grown to 260 students and CHANCES family daycare runs an after school care program each day out of the school.
The school is proud to offer strong ties with families and the community. Bloomfield is always happy to open its doors and invite the public to join us for the annual Terry Fox Run, Run-a-Thon, Heart Art, Remembrance Day Ceremony, Christmas Concerts, Talent Shows and other events that occur throughout the school year. The school has worked hard to adapt to the challenges that Covid has brought and has strived to keep students and staff safe.
